Who are we?
The Asian American Association is a non-profit organization supported by the Asian American Studies department at the University of California, Davis. Through cultural events, discussions, community service, and social gatherings, AAA brings to the forefront the different issues facing Asian Americans today. The club offers social support to its members and exposes them to the diversity within the Asian Pacific Islander community.
AAA provides good opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge and involvement at UC Davis, both through friendships and through committees. Club committees include the Asian American Film Festival, APIA Searchlight Directory, and the Creative Arts Showcase committees.
A short history:
AAA was established in 2000 by a group of students who were dedicated to pursuing and promoting Asian American issues. The club was started also with the intention of providing a place where Asian Americans can gather and find social support.
With a handful of students making up its cabinet, the club started small and began to address its members with concerns and problems facing the Asian American community. The club provides an atmosphere of sharing that encourages understanding and appreciation of diversity. As the years progressed, the club grew larger, hosting more events and activities. Past events included M-Building Open House, discussion sessions, games night, bowling night, Lunar New Year’s Potluck, and Assassins.
In the 2003~2004 school year, AAA brought the first annual Asian American Association Film Festival to the UC Davis Campus. The event aimed to promote Asian American awareness and to help break down stereotypes in the mainstream media. Movies such as Better Luck Tomorrow, Robot Stories, and James Hou's Masters of the Pillow were presented during the week long event.
With the advent of the film festival and other events, membership saw a strong boost as more people were informed of the organization. Today, the club has gained much momentum since its humble beginnings and continues its efforts of promoting Asian American awareness, diversity appreciation, serving the community, and enhancing social connections.
